This top runs small. I usually wear a small, but ordered a medium and still very tight.

I ordered this top in 2 different patterns. I ordered medium in both, which is my usual size. The medium fit perfectly in one pattern, but the medium in another pattern was far too big. Why is there inconsistency in sizing within the same shirt?
